I was born in South Africa, where I worked as an artist and writer. Prior to the country's first democratic election in 1994, I set up a community development program in Johannesburg to facilitate the commercial empowerment of disadvantaged and disenfranchised people, stimulating creative visual expression through textile design and teaching business skills. People from segregated areas came together in a downtown studio, where ideas were shared and individual or group projects explored.
